Welcome to the High School SEM Group Site

Creating future scientists together: Science teachers/Professional Microscopists

"HS students using their JEOL 840 SEM, 2009"

WHAT IS THE HS_SEM GROUP?

The Microscopy Society of America (MSA) has been aware for some time that there are a few high schools which have a scanning electron microscope on their campus.  These schools have been working in isolation, usually supported by an individual sponsor who has initiated the training of a teacher, worked with students and provided ideas for projects which could show students just how exciting, fascinating and beautiful the world of science and technology are.

WHY WAS THE HS_SEM GROUP FORMED?

In 2009, a list of the high schools known to have SEMs on their campus was compiled in a database. A communication network using Google Groups was formed using the address http://groups.google.com/group/hs_sem.  The purpose of this group has been to connect teachers with access to professional microscopists and to other teachers who shared similar experiences in teaching scanning electron microscopy in the middle and high school arenas.  This year, we are improving the visibility and access to this group by creating a Google-Site.

There are numerous web-site resources available to teachers which we have compiled as Resource URLs and which we update and modify as changes are made and additional resources become available.  The database of schools and resources will now reside on this site.

WHO CAN JOIN THE HS_SEM GROUP SITE?

Teachers who have SEMs or would like to have an SEM for their classroom, professional microscopists interested in educational outreach, SEM service providers and vendors willing to work with middle and high school teachers and students to dramatically change the interest and love of science, math, and technology by young people are welcome to join this site.  This is an exciting new avenue for the exchange of information regarding equipment, lesson plans, sharing images and ideas to help open the minds of young people to one of the most exciting technologies used in research, industry and even in the art and architect world today.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE HS_SEM GROUP SITE?
  • To encourage communication and collaboration among high school teachers, professional microscopists, vendors, service providers and other individuals committed to improving the experience of high school students as they engage in science, engineering and technology learning.
  • To provide access to scanning electron microscopy related, current and critical resources to middle and high school teachers.
  • To provide all interested individuals with a perspective on making science, engineering and technology available and useful to young people striving to succeed through exposure to the exciting world of microscopy.
